Global warming may cause as many as 1 in 6 species to go extinct

The planet is nearing a species extinction threshold, beyond which the signal of global warming will become clearer with each passing year, a new study finds. The faster the climate changes as a result of manmade emissions of greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide, the greater the extinction risks to species large and small.
The study, published Thursday in the journal Science, is a comprehensive analysis of 131 peer-reviewed studies of how species around the world may fare as the world's climate shifts, forcing range-limited species to adapt in their current habitat, move or perish

Fisherman helps catch a cow that jumped into the harbour

An Australian fisherman has helped catch a cow that fell into the water off Darwin.
Jonathan Brandenburg was fishing with his wife off Darwin Harbour on April 25, when he heard calls for help coming from a nearby wharf, according to ABC News. He said someone yelled out: "Oi, do you mind helping us out, we've lost a cow!"
Noticing the calls were coming from a live export ship, "we jump in the tinny [aluminium boat]," Brandenburg said. One of the cows being loaded onto the ship had tried to escape and landed in the water.
"So two of [the live export staff] jump in the tinny and one gets his rope out, wrangles it around the animal's neck and pulls it against the boat," Brandenburg tells ABC News. "The boat's going all over the place and me and my wife were freaking out, but it was all good." Read more...

Australians could have VPNs blocked under new piracy bill

The number of Australians using virtual private network services (VPNs) has reportedly jumped in recent years, but consumer advocates are warning a new copyright bill could eliminate the option for Aussies hoping to keep their online activities under wraps.
A VPN helps Internet users anonymise what they do on the Internet. Going online via a VPN service provides a secure, encrypted tunnel through which data can be passed between a user and a website or other online service. This essentially masks the location and identity of the original user. Read more...
