1 killed, 5 injured in Washington ice cave collapse during record heat wave

Record heat and a thin snow pack contributed to a deadly ice cave collapse in Washington state on Monday. While extremely dangerous conditions made it difficult, late this afternoon, rescuers were finally able to recover the body of a 34-year-old woman who was buried when ice caves partially collapsed at a popular recreation area about 70 miles northeast of Seattle

Five others were injured and are expected to survive.

Rescuers say more debris fell overnight, and the body was in the back of the cave, buried by rock and ice. According to a televised report this evening by KIRO, small, controlled explosions were used to provide entry into the cave to aid the recovery. Read more...
