No deal in Senate means key Patriot Act surveillance provisions will expire at midnight
The National Security Agency will lose its authority at midnight to collect Americans' phone records in bulk, after an extraordinary Sunday Senate session failed to produce an 11th-hour deal to extend the fiercely contested program.
Intelligence officials warned that the outcome amounts to a win for terrorists. But civil liberties groups applauded the demise, at least temporarily, of the once-secret post-Sept. 11 program made public by NSA contractor Edward Snowden, which critics say is an unconstitutional intrusion into Americans' privacy.

Everything you need to know about building a successful corporate careers page
Let's face it, even great companies fail to host a "careers" page on their website — or host a poorly designed, ineffective one at best
With more and more job seekers flocking to websites and social media to research companies, it’s important to have a strong online presence — and that means a streamlined, well designed careers page.
Here are some tips for making the most out of your corporate careers page.
1. Don't hide your opportunities
You're hiring, and you need talent. Many companies hide their opportunities under the “About Us" or "Contact Us" sections of their websites, but not all job seekers know to look thereThe more work a job seeker has to do just to find opportunities at your company, the less likely they are to engage with you. 'Halt and Catch Fire' Season 2: What you need to know about the arrival of Mutiny
Much like some of the characters on the show, Halt and Catch Fire feels wiser and more grown up as it enters Season 2
And that's no mistake
At the end of its freshman season, the show saw techies Cameron (MacKenzie Davis) and Donna (Kerry Bishé) join forces for a new venture called Mutiny, which aims to connect gamers in a way that was not common in 1985 — when Atari and Commodore systems prevailed
When Season 2 begins, more than a year has passed since the duo broke away, and things aren't going as smoothly as they'd hoped. Costs are high, and they're battling an infrastructure that can barely support the scale of their idea Read more...

KIEV, Ukraine — Faked. Forged. Doctored. Photoshopped.
That's what new analysis of publicly available satellite images, published Sunday by a team of independent digital sleuths, reveal Russia's Ministry of Defense did with satellite imagery presented in its official report on the downing of Malaysia Airlines Flight 17. They say it was Russia's attempt to blame Ukraine for the crime
The ill-fated Boeing 777 was shot out of the sky over eastern Ukraine while en route from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur on July 17, 2014. All 298 people on board the passenger airliner were killed. Debris from the plane and passengers' bodies crashed and burned in a rural area near the town of Torez, deep inside territory controlled by Russian-backed separatists. Read more...

Traveling to get lost helped me find myself after tragedy
I’d been in Saint Lucia less than 24 hours and already I felt antsy. It didn’t help that the resort was only 10 minutes from the airport, or that we were handed a rum punch the minute we walked into the hotel lobby. Thirty minutes after getting off the plane, I was sitting under a palm tree on a blue and white striped towel reading a book.
The resort was nice, the drinks were free. From my cushy lounge chair I could hear the waves, and see the ocean, vast and blue. Off in the distance, the land jutted out into the sea on either side of me. People were getting ready to get ready to line up at the buffet for dinner. Tacos and empanadas, I overheard somebody say. None of it helped. Read more...

A fan-favorite clone is in major jeopardy on 'Orphan Black'
Did you think last week's big death on Orphan Black was tough? Well, poor Hot Paul may not be the only one we say goodbye to this season
In Saturday's new episode, two lives hung in the balance: one who made it out alive and another who was in more danger than ever by the end of the hour
Surprisingly, neither of the endangered were Sarah or Helena, who both successfully escaped the Castors post-explosion and spent the episode en route back to Clone Headquarters (aka Felix's apartment)
Let’s catch up with everyone in duos. (Well, except Rachel — she’s forever alone.) Read more...

Our hapless hero's comedy tour of hell comes to its conclusion in Louie's Season 5 finale — and it ain't pretty.
He arrives in culturally bankrupt Oklahoma City (at least that's how it's portrayed) to find that the locals are made up of the lowest common denominator. Not only are they racist, but they also don't appreciate good (read: his) comedy.
Throughout the weeklong gig in OKC, Louie is consistently upstaged by fellow comedian Kenny, his temporary roommate and someone he considers "a hack." Crass and crude, Kenny's preferred choice of humor consists solely of insults and jokes about bodily functions — a reflection of his real-life persona. The two men are opposites to say the least Read more...

Project Soli: Google's new experiment to put gesture controls everywhere
Google may have just made every motion controller currently on the market obsolete
At a time when most gesture-sensing technology is unreliable and clunky, Project Soli, one of Google latest cutting-edge experiments from its secretive Advanced Technology and Projects group (ATAP), provides an enticing example of the type of powerful motion controller that could actually change how we interact with everything from smartwatches and tablets to appliances and other everyday objects.
At a basic level, motion controllers are premised on the idea that a user's hands replace traditional input devices like touch screens or mouse and keyboards. Rather than touching a physical object — like a display or button — to control a device, you use hand gestures. Using hand gestures, proponents say, makes user interfaces much more intuitive and easy to use and opens up new ways for designers and developers to create better user experiences Read more...

Muslim chaplain says she faced discrimination aboard United Airlines flight
A chaplain from Chicago's Northwestern University claims she faced anti-Muslim discrimination aboard a United Airlines flight on Friday, while en route from Chicago to Washington, D.C.
Tahera Ahmad said a United flight attendant refused to give her an unopened can of Diet Coke because she said it could be used "as a weapon." When she said she was being discriminated against, another passenger on the plane hurled angry, anti-Muslim comments at her, according to Ahmad.
Others have called for a boycott of United after Ahmad's Facebook post (see below) recounting her experience went viral.
