What Does China Want From Foreign Healthcare Providers?

Given the enormous level of interest by foreigners around the opportunities to invest in China’s healthcare economy, it is uncommon to have a western healthcare service provider ask for help putting China’s objectives in healthcare into some sort of over-arching context. Most companies and investors want help identifying the most lucrative areas, and direction around what regulatory boundaries exist that limit both what they can do, and how they are allowed to deliver their particular services. Both of these are admittedly important points, and ones that are worth fully internalizing. But often overlooked is a deeper understanding of what China most wants from healthcare service providers, and how to place these objectives into a broader context, specifically by looking at other sectors of China’s economy that have gone through the process of opening to the west.
