SURUC, Turkey — The sun was beginning to set at the dusty border gate across from the Syrian town of Kobani and the last of the mini-trucks, queuing all day, were finally beginning to move

Stuffed with bedding, basic supplies and passengers — three to a cabin and on roofs — they inched toward home.

Tens of thousands of people fled to Turkey when Islamic State fighters drove them out in the fall. From the nearby border town of Suruc, they watched their city get destroyed
