Box Office: Reese Witherspoon, Sofia Vergara's 'Hot Pursuit' Flops With $4.2M Friday

The main new release this weekend was the Reese Witherspoon/Sofia Vergara crime caper. The film opened with a frankly disappointing $4.2 million on its first day, setting the stage for a $12m debut weekend. The film cost $35m to produce (split among MGM, New Line Cinema, and Pacific Standard), so it means the film will have to show a little overseas muscle to break even/profit. Even a leggy 3.5x finish still gets the film to just $42m domestic. I'll be honest, I'm surprised. Reese Witherspoon is a pretty reliable opener (even the much-loathed This Means War debuted with $17m while Water For Elephants snagged a $16m debut) and she's coming off the well-liked Wild.
