BALTIMORE — When black residents of Baltimore get asked whether they're surprised by the protests that have thrown their city into the national spotlight over the past week, the answer is almost always some version of, "hell no."
Residents have been shouting in the streets since the death of Freddie Gray, a black Baltimore resident who died in police custody on April 19, a week after he was arrested. His death was in part due to an almost completely severed spine and a crushed voice box.
