iiNet: Aussies may suffer high costs, poor quality streaming under NBN

With the arrival of Netflix on Australian shores, the ability of Australia's Internet networks to handle the increasing traffic is being fiercely debated.

By 2018, 91% of consumer Internet Protocol traffic will be video streaming. That's according to projections from Cisco, which Australia's Communication Minister Malcolm Turnbull, cited at a telecommunication industry summit in Sydney on Monday.

But some, like iiNet's Chief Technology Officer (CTO) Mark Dioguardi, are raising questions about whether Australia's National Broadband Network (NBN) — a government-backed project to roll out fast broadband to 8 million Australian premises by 2020 — can keep up with that kind of demand, and whether consumers will be able to afford it.
